Dear Ray School Families,

Happy December! It’s time for holiday cheer, joyful thoughts, and anticipation of our holiday concerts! During this time of festivities, we are highlighting our Specials, starting with PE. Though all classrooms teach community values and citizenship, our wonderful PE teachers are instrumental in working with our students to promote sportsmanship and cooperation. What amazing things to emphasize, both during the holiday season and all year round! We would also like to take this opportunity to welcome back Clare Brauch from her maternity leave. We imagine that many of your children have shared this great news with you already! A big thank you to Elsa Johnson for teaching PE with Mr. Condon while Ms. Brauch was away. Mrs. Johnson will be continuing to work at the Ray School in a different role come January.

If you haven't had the chance to visit our PE Department webpage, please take a moment to do so. The webpage offers wellness resources, physical activity guidelines for children, the National Association of Sports and and Physical Education (NASPE), and a few other interesting reads. During the month of December, this is what the various grade levels are working on in PE:

Students in grades K, 1, and 2 are continuing to explore with manipulative skills. They are also working on movement activities that continue practicing the concept of spatial awareness, while improving their overall fitness level. Some skills that students are working on include:

  • Underhand roll
  • Underhand toss
  • Overhand throw
  • Catching
  • Dribbling with hands
  • Cup Stacking
  • Aerobic Endurance

Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 are incorporating manipulative skills into game play through invasion games. Offensive and defensive strategies and concepts are discussed and practices. Along with game play, students are practicing communication and teamwork. Some skills that these students are working on include:

  • Underhand toss
  • Overhand throw
  • Catching
  • Dribbling with hands
  • Shooting (basketball)
  • Sportsmanship
  • Speed Stacking

The 5th grade classes also receive two nutrition lessons about carbohydrates and building bone density. Make sure to ask your children what they are learning in PE!
