In 1995, Nan King, an activ
e member of the Hanover Garden Club, approached the first grade teachers at the Ray School to express her interest in working with our students to plant a perennial garden. The Garden Club donated materials for the garden. Students in Mrs. Jemstedt’s class began working with Mrs. King and Barbara Doyle to prepare a garden between the teachers’ room and the shrub border in front of the building. Crocus and narcissus bulbs were planted each year during the following years. The garden was named the First Grade Secret Garden, and it was planted in that location because it could be visited frequently and enjoyed by students and teachers. Students weeded the garden and put it to bed each fall during the first eight years. In recent years, the garden has been extended by others to the other side of the shrub border.
